Our School
Hatch House Montessori School currently offers Montessori education to children from 12 months to nine years of age.
At House House Montessori School, our Mission is to continually improve our facilities, to build and promote ourselves as a multi-cultural school and to further develop and implement progressive programs for the benefit of all children. We believe in the ongoing growth and support of our students in a nurturing, caring environment, where students are inspired toward a lifelong love of learning. Our school is located in a historic mansion in the heart of downtown Whitby. HHMS offers a unique, warm and cozy setting where every child is allowed the freedom to develop a love of learning. The historic setting of HHMS features an environment full of natural wood, and beautiful stained glass windows.
A note from the Principal
The importance of building a strong and positive relationship with students, parents, teachers, and administrators is key to building the foundation to your child’s education. Establishing open lines of communication with your child’s classroom teacher is an essential component to maintain your child’s educational success. Here are a few tips to help establish and strengthen this relationship:
- Stay in regular contact with your child’s classroom teacher. If you need to contact your child’s teacher before or after a parent teacher conference, please do not hesitate to do so.
- Converse with your child daily on what happened during their day. Try to have your child describe in detail what they learned.
Our Staff
Hatch House Montessori faculty are educated, experienced and qualified Montessori Educators committed to supporting and nurturing the development of the whole child. This, together with devotion to the fundamental principles set forth by Dr. Maria Montessori, and an informed, active and caring parent body, creates an affirming, purposeful and harmonious atmosphere.
Dr. Maria Montessori believed that teachers should focus on the child as a person, not on the daily lesson plan. Montessori teachers lead children to ask questions, think for themselves, explore, investigate and discover. Their ultimate objective is to help their students learn independently and retain the curiosity, creativity and intelligence with which they were born. Montessori teachers do not simply present lessons; they are facilitators, mentors, coaches, and guides.
Great teachers help students get to the point where their minds and hearts are open, leaving them ready to learn. In effective schools students are not so much motivated by getting good grades, but by a basic love of learning. Montessori teachers closely monitor their students’ progress. Because they normally work with each child for two or three years, they get to know their students’ strengths and weaknesses, interests and personalities extremely well. Montessori teachers often use the children’s interests to enrich the curriculum and provide alternate avenues for accomplishments and success.

Extra Curricular
Private Piano Lessons with Eleanor Gummer (M.Mus, B.Mus, FTCL, LTCL, ARCT) and Marie-Therese Gummer (M.Mus, B.Mus, G.P.D., A.R.C.T).Lesson Registration is accepted Year-Round.
Music-making is a big part of life at Hatch House Montessori and we are proud to be continuing our Private Piano Lesson Programme. The purpose of the programme is to provide musical enrichment through caring, individual support, to foster personal growth and self-discipline and to further develop a lifelong skill.
Hatch House Montessori is thrilled to offer the Pianokids® course. Designed for the very young beginner, Pianokids® develops proper skills at the piano, with emphasis on sound fingering habits, secure note reading and a strong rhythmic sense.
There are 3 levels of Pianokids®. At the end of Level 3, the student is able to continue in the Royal Conservatory of Music Grade 2 curriculum or any other direction if they so choose.
Piano Lessons are held Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday during the day.
Private Piano Lesson registrations are accepted throughout the year. Registration forms are available in the HHMS office and are available to download on the Casa and Elementary classes Parent Corner page.

Jiu Jitsu with Kumo Martial Arts Academy
Kumo Martial Arts Academy provides Jiu Jitsu to Casa and Elementary at Hatch House Montessori students during the week. Classes are 30 minutes – 1 hour in length depending on the age and level of the child.
Jiu Jitsu at Hatch House helps to develop self-control, discipline, and concentration in a controlled class environment and repetitive practice of essential movements. By teaching and developing fine motor-skills, students will increase their strength and endurance.

Hip Hop Dance Classes with U Got Dance
U Got Dance provides Hip Hop dance classes to Casa and Elementary at Hatch House Montessori during the week. Classes are 30 minutes – 1 hour in length depending on the age and level of the child.
Hip Hop is an athletic form of popular dance that uses a combination of isolated movements, footwork, floor exercise and rhythmic steps to interpret musical selections. Study of this dance form gives students better control over their bodies, increased flexibility, and strength. In addition, the study of dance trains children’s minds by building listening and memorization skills, creativity and concentration.
Registration Forms will be available in the next few weeks. Classes will begin after the December Holidays.
